How To Change Your Reality by Maturing, Expanding and Growing

Change occurs consciously or unconsciously. The level of self-awareness you have largely determines if life is perceived to be happening to you or life is happening in you. Though change happens constantly, most people are unaware of how they are contributing to their current life circumstances. It is only when we reach a point in our journey where we feel stuck, frustrated, confused, or scared that we take the time to ask, “How did I end up here?”

Though it appears that life ‘just happened’, the truth is that we are exactly where we created ourselves to be. Life can operate by no other principle.

We all have our limits. When we reach a level of frustration that is too painful to bear, we find ourselves ready to make conscious changes in our life. This requires immense courage and total honesty. When an individual is honest enough to ask themselves how they arrived at their current circumstances two things occur: 1) they take responsibility for their current life situation and 2) they open themselves to receiving the answer and a solution to their problem.

Our Inner Programs

As mentioned in my previous post of Dare To Free Yourself From Limiting Beliefs, the mind is the creator of your reality and the programs that you have downloaded are called beliefs. When we accept a belief as true this colors our perception in every interaction we have. Thus, it can be said that most people live their lives through unconscious self-fulfilling prophecies of their own making.

When you go through life unconsciously you allow these programs to run in the background filtering every experience you have with previous data from a past encounter. Thus in effect, you are living the same experiences over and over again. These universal difficulties may include: finding a romantic partner, the continuing struggle for financial freedom, chronic physical ailments and diseases, cycles of frustration and depression, working at a lifeless job, not having a sense of passion or zest for life, confusion as to who or what you are really are, etc. These repeated patterns are seeking your attention.

No problem can be solved from the same level of consciousness that created it.” – Albert Einstein

When we sincerely take the time to ask ourselves how we ended up in a given situation we open ourselves up to receiving new information. This new information comes in the form of advice, coincidental encounters with people, seeing a book or movie pop up over and over again with a certain topic or theme, being asked to stretch ourselves at work, seeing someone that needs your help with a similar issue, being called to travel to a new place, a stranger offering their help at the perfect time and place, etc. These are the ways in which the universe speaks to us and answers our questions in a way that we can pay attention to. When we open ourselves to receiving new data and information to integrate within ourselves, we change.

The Power of Imagination and Visualization in Reality Formation

Change does not happen overnight. The process of reality formation first begins with a new inkling that things may be different from what we’ve previously known to be true. In the beginning change is extremely subtle and starts with a new belief or program that has entered into our minds. Often times this new belief circulates as a new thought and builds in a momentum of intensity over a period of time. As we play with this new belief (ex: I deserve – to be listened to, to feel safe, to be loved, to have a job I love, to be healthy, to be happy) we start to visualize specific scenarios in which we embody this new belief. This is called day dreaming and imagination.

We may visualize meeting someone exciting and new, finding that perfect job, speaking to a large auditorium of people on a subject we are passionate about, feeling physically pain free and revitalized, having enough energy to play with the kids and pets, going running, painting, cleaning the house, getting paid what you are worth, etc. All this imaginary work is vital to establishing a new paradigm of reality. Being able to actively visualize a new future-self living your dream life brings the courage and necessary energy to build this new reality into physical manifestation. Repeated imagination of a given thought, scenario, encounter, or experience will eventually bring it into your current life.

“The amount of time it takes for something to manifest is different for everyone and is largely dependent on how focused your mind is and how much energy you have at your disposal.” – Liz Hancock

This is how change occurs in everyone. It is a subtle process that largely goes without notice, yet it is operating in consciousness constantly. When we decide to work with a Spiritual Life Coach, we take this process into our own hands and accelerate it. A Coach is an expert in asking provocative questions that challenge your current mindset and belief systems. A Coach provides insight into your current life circumstance and offers new ways to think, act and behave which sets a client off towards living a more satisfied and fulfilled life that is in line with their personal aspirations and dreams.

To be conscious or unconscious, that is the question! The process of questioning our reality and beliefs is an ongoing progressive process that occurs throughout our lives. This is how life is meant to be lived; constantly maturing, expanding, and growing into ever newer, better versions of ourselves.

What Do You See When You Look At This Homeless Man?

What do you see here? A worthless bum or joyful free being? A disgusting vagrant or a version of your greater Self?

How you see the world tells a lot about you.

“A MAN IS WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT ALL DAY LONG.” – RALPH WALDO EMERSON

There is a passage in the book, Power vs. Force by David R. Hawkins that has stayed with me for many years. For those that are unfamiliar, Hawkins was a prominent American Psychiatrist who was also an ardent spiritual seeker. Through many years of searching he finally realized the ultimate goal, that of awakening or enlightenment.

His scientific background paired with the awakened state prompted him to create a model for expressing various levels of consciousness. Like many emotional scales, his numerical model helps to illustrate increasing levels of maturity and growth in the development of individual human evolution beginning with shame, guilt and apathy and eventually reaching to the pinnacle of conscious evolution and the experience of joy, peace and enlightenment. Instead of paraphrasing this passage, I feel it is best to simply absorb it on your own:

“…Imagine a “bum” on the street corner: In an upscale neighborhood stands an old man in tattered clothes, alone and leaning against the corner of an elegant brownstone. Look at him from the perspective of various levels of consciousness, and note the differences in how he appears to different people and viewpoints.

  • From the bottom of the scale, at the level of 20 (Shame), the bum is seen to be dirty, disgusting, and disgraceful. From the level 30 (Guilt), he’d be blamed for his condition: He deserves what he gets; he’s probably a lazy welfare cheat. At 50 (Hopelessness), his plight would appear desperate, a damning piece of evidence to prove that society can’t do anything about homelessness. At 75 (Grief), the old man looks tragic, friendless, and forlorn.
  • At consciousness level of 100 (Fear), we might see the bum as threatening, a social menace: Perhaps we should call the police before he commits some crime. At 125 (Desire), he might represent a frustrating problem – why doesn’t somebody do something? At 150 (Anger), the old man might look like he could be violent; or, on the other hand, one could be furious that such horrible conditions exist in our country today. At 175 (Pride), he could be seen as an embarrassment or lacking the self-respect to better himself. At 200 (Courage), we might be motivated to wonder if there is a local homeless shelter – all he needs is a job and a place to live.
  • At 250 (Neutrality), the bum looks okay, maybe even interesting. “Live and let live,” we might say – after all, he’s not hurting anyone. At 310 (Willingness), we might decide to go down and see what we can do to cheer up that fellow on the corner; maybe we’d be motivated to volunteer some time at the local shelter. At 350 (Acceptance), the man on the corner appears intriguing: He probably has an interesting story to tell; he’s where he is for reasons we may never understand. At 400 (Reason), he’s a symptom of the current economic and social malaise, or perhaps a good subject for in-depth psychological study.
  • At the higher levels, the old man begins to look not only interesting, but friendly – and then lovable. Perhaps we’d then be able to see that he is, in fact, one who had transcended social limits and gone free, a joyful old guy with the wisdom of age in his face and the serenity that comes from indifference to material things. At 600 (Peace), he’s revealed as our own self in a temporary expression.

When approached, the bum’s response to these different levels of consciousness would vary with them. With some, he’d feel secure – with others, frightened or dejected. Some would make him angry; others would delight him; some he’d avoid, others he’d greet with pleasure. (And so it’s said that we meet what we mirror.)

So much for the manner in which our level of consciousness – that is; the world we encounter as passive observers – decides what we see. It’s true that we’ll react to things in a fashion predicated by the level that we perceive them from, that is to say, external events may define conditions, but they don’t determine the consciousness level of human response…”

Your Life – Your Choice – Your Consciousness

So what did you first see when you set eyes upon this homeless man?

After reading the above passage, where do you fall on the scale of consciousness?

Are you surprised to know that there are many ways to perceive the same thing?

Can you see now that it is the quality of our consciousness that determines our reality?

What we believe, we percieve.

Self-Inquiry and The Spiritual Journey

We all have beliefs, but the challenge is that many of these are unconscious. When we are called to walk the spiritual path we are being called to question our thoughts, beliefs, and emotions. Self-inquiry is the conscious act of questioning oneself and reflecting on whether a particular belief or thought is true.

Examining our thoughts helps us to recognize where we are holding ourselves back in life, where we are limiting ourselves, and where we are not taking responsiblity.

The awakening process is about coming to the truth of who and what we are. We must examine our thoughts and beliefs in order to evolve beyond certain attitudes, states of mind, and perceptions.

Having a spiritual teacher, mentor, and coach can facilitate this process of self-inquiry by asking you the tough questions, helping you face your shadow self, and support you in the integration process.

Change This One Thing and You’ll Change Your Life

As a coach I have the privilege of partnering with some of the most interesting, dedicated, disciplined, intelligent, hard working, and compassionate people across the world. They all come to me with different challenges and areas of concern with a hope that by partnering with a coach they will release blocks, limitations, and set themselves free. It never seizes to amaze me that in a matter of a few short weeks profound transformations can be realized.

But you know what is the most surprising? Their external life doesn’t appear to be any different. They may still be in the same job, processing those difficult relationships, getting back into shape, preparing for that interview, or in the process of moving into a new home. Their lives are still in flux and transition.

Yet, transformation has already been made. They are changed forever and will never be the same, simply by changing one simple thing…

Are you ready to know the secret?

It’s all about Perspective.

PERSPECTIVE – A PARTICULAR ATTITUDE TOWARD OR WAY OF REGARDING SOMETHING; A POINT OF VIEW.

You may laugh at the banality of this cliche, yet true awakenings cannot happen any other way.

Have you ever heard of karma? Karma is the energetic hold of the past that dictates our future. Without clarity of insight we are bound to continue repeating cycle upon cycle of repeated stories from our past.

What does it take to break this cycle aka karma?

Again, awareness and a change in perspective.

That’s it.

Why Shifting Your Perspective Is Freedom

Profound energetic shifts can be made simply by being willing to see your life from another point of view.

It all comes down to how we define a particular event or experience. From an energy perspective, nothing is either good or bad yet as humans we attach meaning to our experiences; some positive, negative or neutral.

We don’t remember the toothpaste brand we used 15 years ago on this day, or the food that we ate because we don’t attribute any meaning to this neutral event. In other words, the experience of the particular food we ate or brushing our teeth are considered neutral or mundane and therefore do not have a strong energetic hold in our memory bank.

Contrast this to the distinct memory of your first job interview or falling in love for the first time. These memories are vivid and still alive within you since we have attributed meaning to this event.

Meaning gives rise to emotion, and emotion gives rise to a feeling tone which dictates how we see the world.

Our memories are nothing more than anchors to feeling states, images, sounds and sensations – which all rely on the meaning we assign them.

Therefore, the stronger the feeling or emotion, the more distinct the memory.

The more distinct the memory, the more we define ourselves by it.

You are the creative director of your life movie. What memories and meaning do you assign to your life which predicts your future?

“FOR THERE IS NOTHING EITHER GOOD OR BAD, BUT THINKING MAKES IT SO.” – SHAKESPEARE (HAMLET)

We cannot change the past but we do have the power to alter our perception of it.

A failed job interview can be viewed from the perspective of disappointment, shame, and fear. If you choose to label this experience this way then any subsequent future job interview will be colored with this energetic vibration.

This is self sabotaging at its best.

However, if we attribute a different meaning to this event, we can change our potential future. A failed job interview can equally be viewed from the point of view that it was a fantastic learning experience, we were given the opportunity to see where we could improve and we now have an understanding of what we need to do in order to improve our performance for next time.

With this perspective we learn from our mistakes and open ourselves up for inviting a more positive future experience.

What about situations where people have hurt or abused us? How can we possibly change our attitude or attribute a different meaning to a very obvious situation of abuse, neglect, or abandonment?

Even in these extreme experiences we have the power to choose a different meaning for us; albeit it requires a willingness to see that people act according to their level of conscious evolution or awareness level at that time.

For example, if you were neglected or abused as a child and your parent treated you poorly you can choose to see yourself as a victim and feel sorry for your upbringing, and that you didn’t grow up in a healthy and loving home.

There are many people who can relate to this narrative so you will never be alone in reliving the past through other people’s negative memories. People form all kinds of groups, clubs, or social activities to perpetuate the identification they choose to keep alive.

On the other hand, you can choose a different perspective – of empowerment and higher awareness. This requires that you dis-identify with the old story and create a new one. Why not? You are the creative director of your life! Who else is going to do it?

Freedom from reliving the past can be found through one very potent universal law: Nothing other people do is because of you. All people’s actions are limited to their conscious awareness at that particular moment in time, and they act in the best way they know how.

People act in the best way they know how. This includes you.

You and everyone else are simply doing the best they can with what they know.

“WHEN YOU KNOW BETTER YOU DO BETTER.” – MAYA ANGELOU

So, first see through eyes of compassion and understanding for others and yourself. We are all doing the best we can. If you can accept this and truly embody this, then your life will open up in new ways that have never before been available to you.

What we believe we perceive.

If you change the way you view your past (aka karma) you reclaim your power to consciously choose your future, and this, my dear friend, is self mastery at its finest!

“YOU CAN SEE ONLY WHAT YOU BELIEVE – NOTHING ELSE IS POSSIBLE.” – BYRON KATIE

These shifts are so powerful that once you accept them, you open yourself to a whole new world that you were previously blind to. Indeed this world is full of magic, wonder, miracles, and immense love.
